Red Word Review Activity
About 15 percent of English words are irregularly spelled, meaning they do not follow an expected rule or pattern for spelling. Sometimes these words are referred to as heart words or sight words. At Ample Education we teach red words through a multi-sensory approach and review the reading and spelling of these words often to assist student’s with mastery of red word reading fluency and spelling accuracy. One way we review red word reading is by making a paper cup tower. The student’s red words are written on each cup and placed in a stack. They read the red word at the top of the stack. If correct, they get to keep the cup and begin building a red word tower. If misread, the cup gets read by the teacher for instant feedback to the student and returned to the pile for re-reading. This is an easy and quick way to review many red words and students LOVE the activity! If you’d like to make this review activity for practice at home, please refer to the reference section of the Ample Education website for the red word lists.
