Alphabet Arch
An Alphabet Arch is a great way to quickly assess letter names and/or sounds and can be used as a warm up for students who already know the letter names and sounds. Ask the student to cover the letter t. Or ask them to cover the letters that say the /k/ sound. Another fun way to use the Alphabet Arch is to play Mystery Letter. Give the student clues that help them cover and eliminate the letters that are not the Mystery Letter. For example, if the Mystery letter is “w,” a clue can be “I am a letter that comes after the letter “m.” The student then covers all the letters that come before the letter “m.” Continue giving clues until you’ve narrowed it down to just a few choices. My final clue is usually a sound clue such as “I make the sound /w/.” I use magnetic transparent chips for students to cover up the letter or sound being eliminated. The reward is the magnetic wand to magically erase the Alphabet Arch board. My students love the Alphabet Arch activities and I gain a lot of quick assessment knowledge while they have fun!
